  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Make the Spiced Apples

  1. Cook the Apples: In a medium skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced apples and cook, stirring occasionally, for 5-7 minutes, until they begin to soften.
  2. Add Sugar and Spices: Stir in the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the apples are tender and the sugar has melted. Set aside to cool.

Make the Caramel Sauce

  1. Prepare the Caramel: In a saucepan, combine the brown sugar, butter, and heavy cream. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture comes to a gentle boil. Continue to cook for 5-7 minutes until it thickens slightly.
  2. Finish the Sauce: Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Let it cool to room temperature.

Prepare the Cake

  1. Bake the Cake: Prepare the vanilla cake mix according to the package instructions. Allow it to cool completely, then cut into small cubes or crumble the cake with your hands.

Make the Whipped Cream

  1. Whip the Cream: In a chilled mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.

Assemble the Trifles

  1. Layer the Trifles: In individual serving glasses or jars, layer the ingredients starting with a spoonful of caramel sauce at the bottom.
  2. Add Cake Cubes: Add a layer of crumbled vanilla cake over the caramel sauce.
  3. Add Spiced Apples: Spoon a layer of the spiced apples over the cake.
  4. Add Whipped Cream: Top with a layer of whipped cream.
  5. Repeat the Layers: Repeat the layers, finishing with a dollop of whipped cream on top.
