Ingredients

Scale

Gather these ingredients to make Garlic Fried Rice:

  • 3 cups cooked white rice (preferably cold, day-old rice works best)
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or sesame oil for extra flavor)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon oyster sauce (optional)
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (optional)
  • 1 egg (optional, for extra richness)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • ½ cup frozen peas or mixed vegetables (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds (optional for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Ingredients:

  1. Prepare the Rice: If using freshly cooked rice, allow it to cool for a few minutes to prevent it from becoming too sticky when frying. Cold, day-old rice is ideal.
  2. Mince the Garlic: Peel and finely mince the garlic cloves. Slice the green onions for garnish.

Cook the Garlic Fried Rice:

  1. Heat the Pan: Heat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the vegetable oil (or sesame oil for extra flavor) and allow it to heat up.
  2. Sauté the Garlic: Add the minced garlic to the hot oil and sauté for 1-2 minutes, until fragrant and golden brown. Be careful not to burn the garlic.
  3. Add the Rice: Add the cold rice to the pan, breaking up any clumps with a spatula. Stir-fry the rice for about 5-6 minutes until the grains are heated through and slightly crispy.
  4. Season the Rice: Add the soy sauce and, if using, the oyster sauce. Stir to evenly coat the rice with the sauces. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Add Optional Ingredients: If adding peas or mixed vegetables, stir them in now, and continue to fry for another 2-3 minutes until they are heated through.
  6. Add the Egg (Optional): If you want to add an egg, push the rice to one side of the pan and add the butter (if using) to the other side. Crack the egg into the pan and scramble it. Once cooked, stir the scrambled egg into the rice.

Garnish and Serve:

  1. Garnish: Sprinkle the fried rice with sliced green onions and toasted sesame seeds for a flavorful and crunchy topping.
  2. Serve: Serve immediately as a side dish or main meal. Pair it with grilled meats, stir-fries, or a fresh salad.
